Irena Maria Tabęckawas born on the 28th August 1934 in Morocz (polesie) eastern Poland. During World War II, she and her family were forced to flee Poland at short notice. Travelling through Siberia in filthy cattle trains, tragically losing her younger brother, Jureczek to illness. Irena settled in a Polish refugee camp in Kondoa in Tanganika East Africa. After six years she was evacuated by ship to the UK in 1948. Throughout her life, Irena worked tirelessly with the polish community in Cambridge –teaching at Polish Saturday School and also teaching drama and dance, choreographing Polish folk dancing along with older and younger people in the community. Irena met her husband Wacław in Cambridge in the early 1950’s, when being chosen as ‘Miss Polonia in Cambridge’. They married on 21st September 1957 and had three children, Andrzej and twins Janusz and Ewa. She was Babcia to six grandchildren, Sabella, Laúra, Kasia, Nicole, Anya and Ella and had a great grand child Ida. Irena also leaves her brother Bogdan.
