Mary Avery (née Jones, 15 October 1940 – 16 April 2026)
Beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend
Mary wished for donations in her memory to be given to Addenbrookes Charitable Trust (ACT) for the important work of Cambridge University’s teaching hospital.
Mary trained as a nurse in ‘Old Addenbrookes’ from 1959 until 1962 (the photograph shows her on her graduation day). It was there that she first met Charles, who had been admitted as a patient with an appendicectomy. Appropriately, Mary spent the last week of her life peacefully in Addenbrookes, dying serenely there on 16 April 2026, having experienced a major aneurysm the week before.
During her time in hospital, Mary and her close family received the most wonderful care from everyone at Addenbrookes, especially its palliative care team and Chaplaincy.

In memory of Mary, such a good friend.
Mrs Kathy Bishton
Mary, you were a lovely person - and I really only knew you in the early 1960s - and Bateman Street was a special place for a number of us, including my Cousin Sue, Mags, Gwen, Charles and Larry - and especially you Mary Jones as you were then of course. Rest in Peace.
