Gillian (Jill) Anne MacLoughlin
Jill was born in May 1940 in Cardiff, the eldest of three children followed by her sister Christine and younger brother Paul. After World War II, Jill’s parents William and Eva moved the family to Guildford in Surrey, where Jill spent a happy childhood.
Jill trained as a teacher and moved to the Alton area, where she met John through a French night class. They married in Guildford in August 1965, honeymooning in Jersey. Two much-loved sons followed - Simon (1966) and Michael (1970).
Jill and John and their young family settled in a brand new house in Ash Walk in Alresford, Hampshire, before moving in 1975 to a wonderful family home at Red Bushes House in Four Marks, where Jill and John loved the garden and the boys loved the space to explore, camp outside and play sports. By now Jill worked as a secretary at Redemptorist Publications in Chawton.
After a further decade living in Alton, Jill and John moved to Newport, Essex in 1996 when John’s work relocated to Stansted. They set up a happy home here for almost 30 years. In 2015, Jill became Grandma Jill to Merryn and Will when Michael and Thalia married.
Over the past two years, Jill unfortunately suffered with dementia, and she passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband and sons late on 29 September 2025.
Everyone will remember her as the smiling, fun loving, warm, caring and lovely woman she was - the Jill who enjoyed cups of tea, hugs, laughter, family time, holidays, shopping, baking, culture, art, gardening and being among friends and family. We will all miss her immensely and remember her always in her role as friend, Grandma, sister, sister-in-law, auntie, cousin, Mum and wife.
We have chosen the Alzheimer’s Society and St Clare’s Hospice as the charities to donate in memory of Jill, beloved wife and mum.

I shall always have happy memories of Jill, who became one of my four best friends over 70 years ago - earlier than any of the others!
