George Everett “Butch” Townsend died peacefully after a short illness,
in the company of loved ones at the Arthur Rank Hospice on 30th July 2025, aged 71 years.
In his final days, he displayed the strength and courage that typified him throughout his life, which was a great comfort to his family.
Much loved husband of Rachel, father to George, Brandon, Nicholas and Zachary and grandfather to Jordy, Payton, Noah, Strat, Ely, Tilly, Jack, Felix and Maggie. Also loved and missed by his daughters in law Lacey, Becky and Dorota.
Born and raised in Providence and Warwick, Rhode Island, USA, Butch served in the United States Air Force for over 20 years. He was stationed in Germany, then lived in the USA and Spain before settling in the UK. After leaving the Air Force Butch worked as the Computer Manager at Trinity College, Cambridge for a further 20 years.
Following his retirement in 2015 he dedicated himself to helping others through tutoring, and political activism through the Democrats Abroad, and spending time with his family all of which he continued up until his illness.

A Celebration of Life will take place later in the day for anyone who would like to join us in celebrating this remarkable man’s life.
