In Memory of Betty Thompson
On 23rd November we said goodbye to Betty who was a very well-known character around town. In April she celebrated her 100th birthday with her family and around 100 friends. Shortly after this her health declined and she moved from Cornell Court, which she loved, into Hatherley House in order to meet her increasing need for 24 hour care.
She’s been described as an amazing, wonderful, inspirational person with an infectious laugh and cheerful personality. She had a zest for life and an ability to communicate this to all who met her, whether from her peers or their grandchildren.
Betty was a very well-known character in the town, having lived in Saffron Walden for around 76 years, 62 of those with her husband Bob. During that time she’s actively supported many charities and organisations such as St Raphael Club, St. John’s Ambulance and Barnardo’s, and was active in the WI, and Support for Sight. You may remember her from her homes in East Street, Debden Road or Mount Pleasant Road, or even as a receptionist in the Saffron Walden hospital or as the ‘universal grandma’ serving all ages in ‘The Toyshop’ in the centre of town.
Betty's family would like to thank you all for your kind words and thoughts during this difficult time.
In particular we would like to thank Hatherley for caring so well for her in her last months and the many friends who visited her to keep her spirits up during this time. We would also like to thank everyone at Cornell Court who made her last 3 years so enjoyable and allowed her to keep smiling, talking and laughing for so long.
For anyone wishing to make a donation in Betty's memory all donations will be gratefully received by two charities close to her heart, Support 4 Sight and Samaritans via the links below or by sending a cheque to Peasgood and Skeates. For those who can't make the service a live webcast is available by using the following link and password;
