John was at the heart of CamRuSS from its conception as an informal voluntary group and supported its development and growth throughout the years. He delivered brilliant talks, helped with organising lectures and film festivals and contributed to every part of its life - with a good joke and his charming smile.
He was a man of big heart and sharp wit. Erudite and diplomatic, he was at the core of our community and will be greatly missed by us all.
Our thoughts are with John’s family.

I am so sad to hear of John's death. He was such warm and humorous person who also shared his extensive knowledge and understanding of Russian history in a compelling and accessible way. I also shared a love of music with him and will remember the Russian course concerts when we played together
Mrs Isabella Warren
